The employment of disabled people in European countries

Research Leader: Prof Anne Waldschmidt (University of Cologne)
Rapporteur: Prof Bent Greve (Roskilde University)

Employment was one of ANED's priority themes for review in 2008, reflecting the importance attached to this area by policy makers within the Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Jobs. This task involved a review of current policy developments at both European and national level, and the collection of research evidence and policy examples from Network members and key stakeholders.

National evidence reports were prepared by ANED country teams (updated in subsequent years) and a summary overview was produced by the rapporteur.

Reports on employment

The Work of ANED on employment

A key part of ANED's work on Employment is to contribute to policy evaluation within the Open Method of Co-ordination. In particular, ANED has played a role in reviewing and commenting on the National Reform Programmes (NRPs) and Implementation Reports that have been produced each year by the EU Member States, within the context of the Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Jobs.

EU Employment Strategy

ANED publishes country reports on the employment situation of disabled people and disability policies in the EU/EEA, and periodic synthesis reports.

The European Employment Strategy, under the Lisbon Strategy, focused on economic growth and jobs. Within this framework, the most relevant EU policy priorities were to attract more people into employment, and retain them; to increase labour supply; and to improve the adaptability of workers and enterprises. The announcement of a new Europe 2020 Strategy in March 2010 marks a new period of development in response to the challenges of economic crisis and sustainability.
